A pre-employment physical is a medical exam an employer may require before officially hiring someone. Its purpose is to determine whether a candidate is physically able to perform the essential duties of the job safely and effectively.
During the exam, a healthcare provider typically reviews your medical history, checks vital signs (such as blood pressure and heart rate), and conducts a basic physical assessment. Depending on the job, it may also include vision or hearing tests, strength and mobility evaluations, and drug or alcohol screening.
Pre-employment physicals are especially common for physically demanding or safety-sensitive roles, such as construction, healthcare, transportation, child-care and public safety positions.
The goal is not to exclude qualified candidates unfairly, but to ensure workplace safety and identify whether any accommodations may be needed.
